Why You Need a DIY Cozy Book Nook as a Highly Sensitive Person (And How to Make One)
When I was a kid I loved little nooks to hunker down in. In the summer it was on the floor wedged between the couch and the AC vent, wrapped in a blanket with my books and a craft project made with a few pieces of string and some old toilet paper rolls.
Outside, it was tucked in a tree limb on the little wooden bench my dad nailed high between two branches. My own private little nest. Away from the hustle and bustle and sound of the house.
Did you do this, too? Tell me.
When we moved here, I had the vision for a little reading and writing spot in the sunny spot at the top of our stairwell leading to our deck.
It quickly turned into a space to throw blankets and pillows and cushions for the deck. It was not living up to its potential so it was time to change that.
By grabbing some things we had around the house, I made it a light and airy retreat space.
A couple of IKEA outdoor seat cushions became my cushy base layer since we usually store them here anyway.
I topped them with a blanket, a throw and some pillows to lean against.
I brought in some pretty things for the window sill, some favorite inspirational books and my crystal collection. That succulent planter in a copper pot is from Trader Joe’s and the copper hammered round tray under the crystals and sage is from World Market.
Can you create your own nook? You don’t need a fancy spot, just a space that feels good. Here are some things to look for.
How to pick the space for your nook
Little floor nooks are best if they:
Are off the beaten path. Out of the hustle and bustle.
Can be left setup.
Are protected on three sides. Any room corner next to a dresser or a big bushy plant will do.
Are cozy with blankets and cushions and pillows.
Take you closer to nature with a big giant plant or a window nearby.
Have space for a few favorite inspirational books and some of your favorite things.
Why you need a DIY cozy book nook as an HSP
This space restores a sense of internal calm and stillness in me like nowhere else in my house. I’m away from the TV, appliances, clutter and reminders that there are chores that need to be done.
It’s a space to create, write, meditate and read.
Visit for just ten minutes or spend all day there to get away from it all. Soothe your nervous system and get back to equilibrium.
